This is a small, studio-based workshop designed as a clear and supportive introduction to loose watercolour roses.
The group is limited to four people, allowing for close guidance, direct feedback, and a much more hands-on experience than larger classes.
This workshop focuses on breaking down the structure of a rose into a few simple marks, and then noticing how quickly it becomes overworked when you try to refine it too soon. You’ll explore how to suggest the form of a rose without needing to build every petal, using colour, water and brushwork to let the shape emerge.
Through guided exercises, you’ll work with repeated spiral-like movements and layered marks, seeing how much you can leave untouched before stepping back in. The focus is on recognising when something is already working, even if it feels unfinished, and what happens when you keep going past that point.
You’ll have space to experiment with wet-on-wet, soft edges and controlled marks, getting used to how roses can form through a combination of loose structure and restraint. Small shifts in timing and pressure make a noticeable difference, and you’ll begin to see how these decisions affect the final piece.
By the end of the session, you’ll have a series of rose studies and a clearer sense of how to approach loose florals without overworking them.
You will be given a complete watercolour kit, including paints, brushes and paper, to use during the session and take home afterwards.
Suitable for anyone interested in exploring loose, expressive watercolour techniques.
